Comparing A Brain-Based Account of Mind with Dual-Processing Theories

چکیده

This theoretical paper compares dual-processing theories (DPT) with a constructivist account of the mind (both knowing and learning). This account, termed reflection on activity-effect relationship, provides a single, multistep model of processing situated within three functional systems in the human brain. Using well-known examples from DPT studies, two types of reflection (mental comparisons) and corresponding stages through which existing conceptions may be transformed into new ones—are postulated to link conceptual learning with brain functioning. The central argument advanced here is that (a) distinguishing two frames of reference (observer, problem solver) and (b) articulating the solution process as well as the nature of problems (e.g., prompts), not only improves explanations of thinking taken-up by DPT, but also extends the range of issues addressed to cognitive change, which are germane to education.

Comparing auditory sustained attention in children with auditory processing disorder and normal children

Introduction: Auditory processing disorder (APD) is a type of abnormal perceptual processing of auditory information within the central auditory nervous system that could be influenced by cognitive factors, such as attention. Attention is one of most important cognitive functions in the development of learning in children, so it is important to recognize and evaluate a variety of attention defi...

The Embodied Embedded Character of System 1 Processing

In the last thirty years, a relatively large group of cognitive scientists have begun characterising the mind in terms of two distinct, relatively autonomous systems. To account for paradoxes in empirical results of studies mainly on reasoning, Dual Process Theories were developed. Such Dual Process Theories generally agree that System 1 is rapid, automatic, parallel, and heuristic-based and Sy...

Iranian EFL Learners' Processing of English Derived Words

An interesting area of psycholinguistic inquiry is to discover the way morphological structures are stored in the human mind and how they are retrieved during comprehension or production of language. The current study probed into what goes on in the mind of EFL learners when processing derivational morphology and how English and Persian derivational suffixes are processed. 60 Iranian EFL learne...

Individual differences in working memory capacity and dual-process theories of the mind.

Dual-process theories of the mind are ubiquitous in psychology. A central principle of these theories is that behavior is determined by the interplay of automatic and controlled processing. In this article, the authors examine individual differences in the capacity to control attention as a major contributor to differences in working memory capacity (WMC). The authors discuss the enormous impli...

Image processing by alternate dual Gabor frames

‎We present an application of the dual Gabor frames to image‎ ‎processing‎. ‎Our algorithm is based on finding some dual Gabor‎ ‎frame generators which reconstructs accurately the elements of the‎ ‎underlying Hilbert space‎. ‎The advantages of these duals‎ ‎constructed by a polynomial of Gabor frame generators are compared‎ ‎with their canonical dual‎.
